Oxygen is a gas that exists all around us, mixed in with other gases in the air. When you breathe in, air travels down your windpipe and into your lungs. Your lungs are like two big balloons that inflate with each breath. Inside these balloons are tiny air sacs called alveoli, which look like bunches of grapes.

The alveoli have a very special job. They act like tiny gas stations, allowing oxygen to pass from the air you breathe into your bloodstream. At the same time, they release a waste gas called carbon dioxide, which we breathe out when we exhale. It's like a trade happening inside your lungs – fresh oxygen goes in, and used-up carbon dioxide comes out.
Oxygen: The Powerhouse of Your Cells
Once oxygen reaches your bloodstream, it hitches a ride on red blood cells, tiny travelers that zoom throughout your body. These red blood cells deliver the oxygen to all your cells, just like delivery trucks bringing supplies!
Inside your cells, oxygen joins forces with another important ingredient, sugar, in a special process called cellular respiration. This process is like a tiny power plant inside each cell, using oxygen and sugar to create energy. And guess what that energy is used for? It's used to power everything you do, from running and jumping to thinking and dreaming!
What Happens Without Oxygen?
Just like a factory needs fuel to run, your body needs oxygen to keep functioning properly. If you don't breathe in oxygen for too long, your cells won't have enough energy to do their jobs.
